Colton Golf Course,
instituted night golf more than 42 years ago and has recently revamped its lighting system to brighten the
course. The course is well-lit and accommodates players of all skill levels.
Golfers cite certain advantages to playing at night.
The course is not as crowded – so you can play at your own relaxed pace – and the greens fees are considerably cheaper than a weekend day
rate. Others play night golf through necessity. A golfer out of Fontana
played after he get off work on weeknights because he couldn’t find the
time to play on weekends.
Golfers often do not have the time for a 5 1/2 hour weekend
round, so they come out to Colton during the evening where they can finish
in 3 hours or less.
Finding golf courses equipped for night play is
strictly hit-and-miss. Most golf-course guides do not tell readers
if night golf is available at a particular course.
The United States Golf Association does not keep track
of courses that are lit. Neither does the National Golf Foundation, the
industry’s numbers-crunchier.
However, most courses equipped for night golf are
executive-size, mainly consisting of par 3’s and short par 4’s. David L.
Baker Golf Course in Fountain Valley is a par-62 layout. Dominguez Golf
Practice Center has 18 par-3 holes, and Newport Beach Golf Course is a
par-59. There are also several nine hole, pitch-and-put courses in southern
California that offer night golf.
But Colton Golf Club is unique because it was designed by
Robert Trent Jones Sr. a renowned golf course architect and at one time,
legendary professional Sam Snead was part owner and played whenever he was in
town. The course has a real nice layout providing a challenge for even low-handicapper, rewards accuracy more than distance and provides the beginner
the perfect way to learn the game of golf.
The course is conveniently off the 10 Freeway, has fair
prices and is not overly crowded. In the summer and winter, its view of the San
Bernardino mountains are spectacular and lends itself to a relaxing game of
golf.
